Hand mining is a traditional tunnelling method used in confined or complex environments where mechanical equipment can’t operate. Skilled workers manually excavate soil or rock using handheld tools like jackhammers, picks, and shovels. Spoil is removed via wheelbarrows, rail trolleys, or conveyors, and ground support (such as timber sets, rock bolts, mesh, or shotcrete) is installed progressively to maintain tunnel stability.
This method is ideal for small-diameter tunnels, service connections, or areas with restricted access—especially in urban or sensitive locations where vibration, noise, or precision is a concern.
